Before you move.
Use a relaxed, open partner connection and leave enough space to walk through the slot. The count details below follow one common On1 classroom version; ask your teacher if their styling differs.
Teaching note: Counts and pathways are one classroom reference, not a universal rule for every salsa style. Follow Yerri or your local teacher's convention where it differs.
Take it count by count.
Use this slow eight-beat map as a practice aid, not a required timing system. Follow your teacher's style-specific break step, keep movements small enough to balance, and leave time to reset.
Leader begins the forward break; follower marks the complementary action without rushing ahead.
Both transfer weight. Keep the connection elastic and comfortable.
Leader begins opening the body to one side. Follower keeps the basic timing and waits for space.
Let the invitation become clear. Do not pull the follower through the slot.
Leader steps away to create a visible pathway. Follower begins travelling forward when invited.
Follower walks through the open lane with small steps; leader stays grounded and makes space.
Finish facing your partner in a comfortable open position. Let hands meet softly.
Breathe and find the basic together before choosing another move.
Make room for both dancers.
If you're leading
Rotate your torso and step out to make space. A gentle directional cue is enough; do not yank, push or block the travel path.
If you're following
Walk through the opening at your own speed and maintain your balance. If the path or invitation is unclear, keep a basic step and wait.
Listen for the space.
Hear the first half as a preparation and the second half as travel and reconnection. Keep the line-of-dance area around you clear.
Practise the phrase
Tap start and let the count set the pace. Try the slow setting if you want more time to place your feet.
Step forward — find the one.
Little things that help.
- Practise the opening without a partner so the pathway is obvious.
- Keep the travel lane wide enough for comfortable steps.
- If you both miss the timing, smile, find the pulse and restart the basic.
What if I lose the count?
Listen for the pulse, make a small step on the next phrase and return to a basic. You do not need to apologise for learning.
Can I practise this on my own?
Yes. Walk the footwork solo first. The partner cues on this page are prompts for comfortable, consensual social dancing — not a requirement to have a partner to learn.
