Before you move.
This lesson uses a common On1 partnerwork interpretation. Practise the walk-through without a hand connection first, agree on a comfortable range and avoid compressing the follower's arm into the body.
Teaching note: Counts and pathways are one classroom reference, not a universal rule for every salsa style. Follow Yerri or your local teacher's convention where it differs.
Take it count by count.
Use this slow eight-beat map as a practice aid, not a required timing system. Follow your teacher's style-specific break step, keep movements small enough to balance, and leave time to reset.
Leader marks the basic and offers a readable preparation. Follower remains on their own timing.
Both change weight without twisting the connected shoulder.
Leader changes body position to suggest the upcoming redirect; keep the pathway open.
Use the pause to make the invitation clear rather than adding force.
Follower begins a compact turn or check in the offered direction. Leader stays grounded.
Let the connection soften so the follower can rotate without the arm being wound.
Both finish in a comfortable open position with space between shoulders.
Settle the connection and return to a familiar timing pattern.
Make room for both dancers.
If you're leading
Think of the action as a clear invitation, not a catch. Keep the elbow comfortably bent and release tension as the turn completes.
If you're following
Maintain your centre and respond to the direction you can feel. Never force a shoulder or accept a painful range of motion.
Listen for the space.
The redirection is shaped over two phrases; keep the count audible and leave a breath at 4 and 8.
Practise the phrase
Tap start and let the count set the pace. Try the slow setting if you want more time to place your feet.
Step forward — find the one.
Little things that help.
- Walk the pathway without hands before dancing the lead.
- Use less arm pressure than you think you need.
- Agree on a smaller, comfortable turn if the connection feels crowded.
What if I lose the count?
Listen for the pulse, make a small step on the next phrase and return to a basic. You do not need to apologise for learning.
Can I practise this on my own?
Yes. Walk the footwork solo first. The partner cues on this page are prompts for comfortable, consensual social dancing — not a requirement to have a partner to learn.
